Carl is a modern-day brand and business adventurer; by all accounts unemployable. Following formal training as a Product Designer at St. Martins, he concluded that pursuing a “real job” was not his thing. Having lived in 9 countries and started businesses in 5, the idea of being free held more allure.
He spent the first 19 years of his “career” as a hands-on Creative Director and founder / co-founder of a series of unconventional startups (ranging from luxury sex toys to AI-powered private banking) - some highly successful, some highly educational.
In 2020 he made the leap from entrepreneur to solopreneur, in hot pursuit of independence and autonomy – in his contrarian opinion, the only things worth striving for. REBEL U is an amalgamation of this creed combined with skills, expertise and experience accrued from building products, brands and businesses on the avant-garde startup frontlines.

What is professional independence?
The freedom to work independently; to make available your skills, expertise and superpower(s) – something of value you do exceedingly well with little effort – to the world on your own terms.
It’s about autonomy. To chose your own clients, products / services, schedule, location and time. To make decisions without revisions, buy-in, compromises or approval; to build something that is yours.
Is IT the same as financial independence?
In this context no. Professional independence is about autonomy over how, when, who and what you work. Financial independence entails you no longer have to work, as you have sufficient cash or passive income, to maintain your desired life and lifestyle (forever or the foreseeable future).
However, financial independence may follow professional independence (but is not guaranteed), as earning potential when doing your own thing is essentially uncapped and unlimited. There is further the lingering satisfaction, if successful, in knowing you made it on your own.
I want lots of employees. Is Rebel U for me?
No and yes … “No” in the sense that we create one-person, freedom-optimised “no boss, no employees” service businesses based on your skills, expertise and superpowers, as a foundation for independence.
“Yes” in the sense that once you’re independent you can go on to expand your business or indeed go on to establish other businesses, which may or may not require lots of employees.
I’m afraid to stand out. Can Rebel U help me blend in?
Blending in never got anyone, anywhere. We provide rebelification services: if anything, we’ll make you stand out … by a fair margin (relative to your industry). This is by design; to help you cut through the noise, and stake a memorable claim as the “go to for X” in the mind of potential clients. Plus it’s more fun.
If you seek to go independent, but envisage looking, sounding and feeling like a chip off the old corporate block – something bland, forgettable, beige and cornflower blue perhaps – REBEL U might not be for you. Everybody loves a rebel; a corporate clone … not so much.
Can Rebel U help me run my business?
